Egypt Itinerary- for First-Time Visitors
Top Tips for Traveling in Egypt
Book Private Tours: The experience will be smoother and more enriching. A guide can help navigate language barriers, scams, and cultural nuances while providing fascinating historical insights.
Check for Airport Transfers: Many hotels offer free or paid airport shuttles. This saves you from bartering after a long travel day.
Splurge on Unique Experiences: Don’t miss out on a Nile cruise or a hot air balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings—they’re worth every penny.
Understand Tour Inclusions: Most tours don’t include site admission fees or tips. While entry fees are generally minimal, always read the terms before booking.
Stay Informed on Travel Advisories: Government warnings can be broad. When we traveled, Egypt was listed as “reconsider travel,” but we had a fantastic and safe experience by working with local guides and being mindful of regions to avoid.

A cruise offers a perfect balance of adventure and tranquility, making it an unforgettable journey through ancient Egypt.
Highlights:
Visit famous sites like Abu Simbel, Philae Temple, Kom Ombo, and Edfu Temple along the way.
Relax and enjoy the scenic beauty of the Nile.
Tour Suggestions:
Luxor to Aswan- 5 Days 4 Nights from Luxor to Aswan on Gentle Breeze Dahabyia - My #1 choice if your budget allows—floating peacefully on the Nile is unforgettable.
Luxor to Aswan- 5 Day/ 4 Night Nile cruise - Includes accommodation, meals, and guided tours—a perfect way to end your trip!
Aswan to Luxor- 4 Day/ 3 Night Nile Cruise- A shorter, budget-friendly option.
Note:On our trip, we took the reverse route, traveling by train from Luxor to Aswan on Day 6. We stayed in Aswan that evening and began our cruise on Day 7. We opted for this route because the longer and more expensive 5-day, 4-night cruise didn’t align with our budget or schedule.
In hindsight, I now recommend cruising from Luxor to Aswan instead. This route flows downstream, meaning a tugboat isn’t required, making the journey more tranquil and likely even more relaxing!
Whatever you do, don’t miss out on a Nile cruise—it was one of the most unforgettable highlights of our lives! If you’re on a tighter schedule or budget, consider booking Instead- book this 4 Day Cruise from Aswan to Luxor, and just take the train from Luxor to Aswan beforehand!
Day 11: Aswan
Disembark from the cruise and relax in Aswan.

Highlight: Stay on Elephantine Island and enjoy its blend of Egyptian and Nubian culture. Don’t miss the flavorful Nubian cuisine!

Medinet Habu, Luxor Egypt
When Jake and I returned from Egypt, everyone would ask us how our trip went. Many were interested to hear if we felt safe or if it was everything we imagined. It was always hard to put the experience into words. It just truly was a grounding, and life changing experience. I went into the trip with a very strong knowledge of the history of Ancient Egypt, but I came home with such an enriched understanding of the beautiful and sometimes not so beautiful recent history of the region. We probably would have stayed for years if we could have had Bentley (our lab collie) and our cats brought to us on private charter!
The Middle East carries a unique energy, and from what we have heard from our guides (who may be biased) it’s especially present in Egypt. There’s a profound spiritual essence in the air, as if the land itself holds the prayers, hopes, and stories of countless generations. The faith of the people is palpable, whether through the call to prayer resonating across the city or the quiet reverence found in a Christian chapel. It’s not just a personal belief—it’s woven into the rhythm of daily life, creating an atmosphere of trust, safety, and purpose. This shared faith, whether Islamic or Christian, fosters a sense of unity that feels grounding and sacred.
Coming from America, the cultural contrast is striking and humbling. In the U.S., individualism often takes center stage, with an emphasis on self-expression, personal success, and independence. While there is beauty in that freedom, it can sometimes feel isolating—like everyone is out for themselves. In Egypt, by contrast, there is a collective focus on faith and community. Nearly everyone believes in a higher power, and that shared conviction creates a profound sense of togetherness. You feel it in the warmth of interactions, the generosity of strangers, and the seamless way faith is integrated into every aspect of life.
The land itself amplifies this feeling. Egypt’s history is so ancient, so rich, that it feels sacred. Walking among the pyramids, temples, and tombs, you’re not just visiting places—you’re stepping into stories that span millennia. It’s as if the Middle East invites you to pause, reflect, and connect with something greater than yourself. The difference is profound, leaving you in awe of a culture where connection—to history, community, and the divine—is at the heart of it all.
Don’t get me wrong—there were parts of Egypt that were shocking in ways that felt less spiritual and more sobering. Corruption within the government is an undeniable reality, and scars from past conflicts are still visible, like war-torn apartment complexes and crumbling infrastructure that stand as reminders of hardship. There’s also a striking gap between the grandeur of ancient Egypt and the realities of modern life. While visitors marvel at the pyramids, temples, and tombs, modern Egyptians often feel disconnected from this ancient legacy. After the fall of ancient Egypt, the region was reinhabited and influenced by diverse cultures and peoples from other areas, creating a heritage that, while rich and vibrant, is distinct from the civilization of the pharaohs.
This contrast is both fascinating and humbling. Egypt today is a place of incredible resilience, where the beauty and sacredness of its ancient history stand alongside the challenges of its modern struggles. For modern Egyptians, the wonders of the past often feel like monuments to a distant civilization rather than a direct reflection of their own identity. It’s a land where history, faith, and hardship coexist, revealing the complexities of a country that continues to evolve while carrying the weight of its extraordinary past.
“Egypt is full of dreams, mysteries, memories.”
